Heineken’s president for Africa and Middle East, Mr. Tom de Man, will come here to sign the deal with director general of PPESA, Beyene G. Meskel.
The Dutch brewery giant, Heineken, is to seal a deal here with the Ethiopian Privatisation and Public Enterprise Supervising Authority (PPESA) on August 10, next month, for the purchase of Harrar and Bedele breweries.
A senior official at EPSA told The Reporter that Heineken’s president for Africa and Middle East, Mr. Tom de Man, will come here to sign the deal with director general of PPESA, Beyene G. Meskel. After signing the agreement, Tom de Man and Beyene will hold a joint press conference at the Addis Ababa Hilton Hotel.
Tom de Man joined Heineken Brouwerijen in 1971. He spent the first four years at the Dutch-based Heineken Technical Services Departments, where he was involved in quality control of overseas breweries, new brewery projects and an overhead value-analysis exercise. He then held a number of overseas positions: technological controller of Asia Pacific Breweries – Singapore, Brewery manager at Nigerian Breweries Ltd., starting-up/control of license operations in Korea/Japan and group production director Dreher S.p.A. (Heineken Italy).
Heineken’s bid to buy both Harar Brewery SC and Bedele Brewery SC for 78.18 million dollars and 85.24 million dollars, respectively, has been approved in April.
Heineken’s bid for Harar Brewery was won without competition, but the company’s bid for Bedele Brewery met with three competing bids.
Heineken beat the 70 million dollar bid from South-West Development, the 68 million dollar bid from BGI, and the 64 million dollar bid from Carlsberg.
According to Heineken’s bid document, the company has paid 30 percent and the remaining amount would be settled when the deal is sealed.
Harar brewery is located in the historical town of Harar, 530 km east of Addis, and is the only brewery in the eastern part of the country. It is the closest brewery to the Djibouti and Berbera ports.
